Far West Texas Free Range Elk Hunts
We hunt several different properties for Elk in the Van Horn area and occasionally near Ft. Stockton. These free ranging Elk have migrated down from New Mexico, and a few were also transplanted over 50 years ago in this area to try to reintroduce a strong Elk herd to the West Texas region. These are true Free Ranging Elk! Texas Elk Hunts will take place over large irrigated fields, water tanks, and surrounding brush country where the elk feed and bed regularly. Bulls range in all sizes and it is the hunter’s choice on what he or she would like to harvest with no size or point limits. Elk Herds range in size from 5 to 25 plus animals. We will also offer a few Cow Elk Hunts each year to regulate the herd population.
Over the counter Elk Tags
Easy to get over the counter Elk Tags make this a great hunt for someone not wanting to travel long distances out of state and still get a true free range Elk Hunting experience or for someone tired of not getting drawn for an out of state Elk Hunt tag. No Draw or Tag is needed for these hunts; Elk are considered an Exotic in Texas so a General Resident license is all that is needed to hunt one or a 5 Day Non-Resident license which is only $48 over the counter. We expect a high shot opportunity on these hunts as long as the weather is cooperating. Prices are very competitive compared to others in the area and with a flat fee (no trophy fees) Elk Hunting in Texas cannot be beat! Very few hunts will be offered each year and we will pre book up to 2 years in advance. Guided Elk Hunts will be offered starting in August for a hunter wanting a nice bull in velvet and in September when they are hard horned and in the Rut. We can also conduct Guided Elk Hunts during the winter months if available.
West Texas Elk Hunting Trips
Your West Texas Elk Hunt includes meals and lodging. Bow or rifle hunters are welcome. Elk Hunts will be conducted out of brush/hay blinds, safari style and spot and stalk. These hunts are perfect for anyone in any physical condition due to the flat terrain, good roads, and easy access to the fields. Shots in the 300 to 400-yard range will be expected and a minimum caliber of .270 or similar is required with a .30 caliber rifle highly recommended. Archery or Pistol hunters can be set up over water holes for closer shots or at the edges of the fields where the Elk funnel into feed. Make sure you bring at least 2 Large Ice Chests for the meat; ice can be bought in town only 15 minutes away so no need to travel with it prior to the hunt. Taxidermy is available at several nearby locations.
Addax Hunts
Hunts are offered on both low fence and high fence with very limited availability. Bulls, Cows, and Broken horns are all offered. Addax is excellent table fare and make great mounts with their screw shaped horns and are from the antelope species. Trophy hunts range from $5,500 to $6,500 and Broke horns on average $3,500 to $4,500.
Style of hunt - Spot & stalk plus safari style, available year-round.
Blackbuck Antelope Hunts
These small antelope can be hunted year-round although dominant buck coats are typically darkest in the fall and winter and lighter in the warmer months. We have multiple properties to hunt blackbuck both low fence and high fence. Day hunts when available are offered and also fully guided package hunts. Trophy Buck hunt cost is $3,500 to $4,000.
Style of hunt will mainly be Spot & Stalk with some safari style. Blackbuck Antelope hunts are a great option for a combo hunt.
Fallow Deer Hunts
We offer all 3 color phases (Chocolate, Spotted, & White) and only book 2 to 3 Buck hunts a year to ensure maturity and trophy quality. Fallow Deer are mainly hunted behind high fence although when numbers allow, we do hunt low fence. Trophy Fallow hunt cost is $5,500 to $7,500.
These hunts can be done out of a blind, so Archery hunting is an option, if not safari style is our main tactic. Fallow Deer are best hunted late Summer for a velvet buck and early Fall for hard horned.
Feral Goat Hunts
This is a Free-Range hunt that also includes Feral Hogs in some very scenic canyon country. Feral Goat hunts can be set up to include meals and lodging or just lodging and pricing is determined based off the group size. Hunt cost is $1,250 to $1,800 per Person, minimum of 2 hunters to book.
Style of hunt will mainly be spot and stalk. This hunt is great for the off season or as an add on to another hunt and is designed for small to medium sized groups.
Mouflon Hunts
Pure European Mouflon are best hunted in the late fall and winter for a full coat with trophy rams on average measuring 29” to 35” horn length. This is a challenging hunt and where we primarily hunt there is lots of cover for them. These are not mixed cross type rams and out of the sheep species they make good table fare. Hunt cost is $3,000 to $4,500. We do offer Mouflon cross ram hunts on the Devils River free-range and on other properties, please inquire for specifics on those hunts.
Hunts are done primarily out of blinds but can also be done spot and stalk and are high fence.
Scimitar Horned Oryx Hunts
Scimitar Horned Oryx hunts are offered on both low fence and high fence properties and are available to hunt year-round. Oryx make great table fare with hunts offered for Bulls, Cows, and Broken Horns. Cows usually have longer horns than bulls and bulls will have more mass than cows. Trophy Bull & Cow Hunts will be $3,500 to $5,500 and Broken Horns $2,200 to $2,500.
